Happy New Year! Here's the thread where you can tell us what you thought about the last movie/s you watched. Whether on the TV, streamed or at the cinema, new or old, here's the 2026 thread to discuss it. Genre-related would be nice, but it doesn't always have to be!

The old 2025 thread is HERE.

Predator: Badlands (2025)

I watched Spoorlos a few days ago, which is an incredible film, and last night The Fog, which is just rather tacky looking. Some nice music, though.

Which version? I'm assuming the 1980 John Carpenter version & not the awful Tom Welling remake?
Yes, the old one. I didn't know there had been a remake. Then again, I only just remembered that there's a Robocop remake too (haven't seen that one either)!

Best you didn't know, to be honest. (See also "The Haunting". :) )
I think I have seen the newer version of The Haunting, and I remember liking it :O It's not a patch on the original film of course.

I watched a Belgian horror film - Alleluia. Would have been forgettable if not for some great performances, especially from the children. The main characters are truly detestable.

Rampant Metaphors Duo (or is that Rampaging Metaphors on Shudder?):

Fascination (1979) dir. Jean Rollin; starring Franca Maï, Brigitte Lahaie, Jean-Marie Lemaire

The poor fight each other over money leading to their downfall and destruction as the wealthy step in and take it from them. Here one thief declines the amorous invitation of a poor woman but falls for the sexual advances of a wealthy woman, only to find that love may be conditional and the wealthy will suck you dry, some of them more literally than others. The film offers a multitude of wealthy femme fatales in various states of undress. Oh, and ox blood may help stave off anemia, at least in the 19th century.

Last year I watched three of Rollin's earlier movies and the last one wasn’t bad, so I opted for one more; this one is considered his best. It is interesting with some nice location shooting, though the gist of it is rather obvious.

Possession (1981) dir. Andrej Zulawski; starring Isabelle Adjani, Sam Neill, Margit Carstensen, Heinz Bennent

Faith is difficult. A man may only know so much about a woman, and marriage to one may interfere with a woman becoming who she is meant to be, or wants to be. But then, God may not be fulfilling either, at least until the third act, by which time trying to help him manifest will require killing a bunch of men while attempting to explain what’s going on without actually explaining it. It should be noted, His (if it is God) possession of you may cause paroxysms Linda Blair would envy, while His release into the world will result in bombing raids, or at least in air raid sirens.

Adjani commits to her role with abandon and is often mesmerizing. Neill, while less mesmerizing, is certainly as committed to his role. Bennent is something like comic relief, and enjoyable to watch. I know this is on a log of "best of" lists, well-regarded by many critics and viewers but for me, all the actors' and director's skill cannot make this movie less pretentious.

I think I’ve had my fill of French films. I need a palate cleanser. Maybe something like “Smokey and the Bandit.”

Definitely an odd one. As you said, Randy, the acting is great and clearly the actors are giving it their all; but the film itself? Not sure I totally got it.

3 on TPTV UK freeview channel

" THE UNDERTAKER " ( Michael Wright )

Good thriller with Paul McGann who gets in too deep ( sic ) with some local hoods . Deliberately bland colours which are affecting . Also worth watching Tara Fitzgerald describing the meta physics of snooker !

" WARNING FROM SPACE " ( Koji Shima )

Japanese sci fi . Love it .

" THE BODY BENEATH " ( Andy Milligan )

Vampires living in Highgate Cemetery look for a way to carry on the bloodline .
Very camp and bizarre . Looks slightly amateurish which adds to the charm .

And this on PRIME UK I think .

" DRACULA " ( Luc Besson )

Heard this described by one critic as the worst film of last year . A bit harsh , but I'll watch anything with Dracula in the title ! .

SINNERS ( Ryan Coogler )

Interesting take on oft told vampire lore . I thought " Near Dark " mixed with " Oh Brother , where art tho " .

A fantastic 3 minute one take in the barn dance .

Recommended .

Though Sinners was OK, although overrated, and certainly not the film of last year. 16 nominations? More than the Lord of the Rings movies, Ben Hur, Lawrence of Arabia? Can't see it myself.

Perhaps it is less about being better than those movies, more that Sinners had less competition than them. I certainly felt that last year was a relatively poor year for movies that I wanted to see.

Agree that it's probably over hyped but still feel it's worth watching and if you go in thinking " 16 nominations it'll be amazing " you'll likely be disappointed .

Personally , never gave much credence to The Oscars . The Academy has it's own " agenda " .

I was impressed with "Sinners" for the acting (Jordan in particular, though Steinfeld and Lindo are very good, too), the production values and the way it wove a vampire story into race history that is still relevant, unfortunately. For me the dance scene is a striking compression of Black joy in the face of much of that history, and adds contrast to what happens thereafter.

That said, it isn't as grand as Lawrence of Arabia or Lord of the Rings, and I won't be surprised if DiCaprio's movie walks off with the majority of the awards. I didn't see a lot of 2025 movies, but then the majority didn't seem all that interesting.

Oh, but I did enjoy, if that's the right word, Weapons, though I think a lot of that movie's appeal comes from Amy Madigan's character.

Randy , thank you sir . I was praising the technical expertise employed during the " one cut " dance scene and enjoying the music and dancing . Now , I gain a new perspective and an appreciation of racial culture . As an aside , I believe Spike Lee is a big fan of the movie .

In the acting side I'd like to praise Jack Connell , the leader of the 3 piece band trying to be invited in . Ha ha, after all they must be invited in . What a run he's enjoying just now ! ( 28 years later )

And I really enjoyed WEAPONS . Earlier in the day I chatted to author / critic Anna Bogutskaya and when I told her I was going to see it later that day she was thrilled for me and said she'd loved it .

Fairly local lad to me here - lived about 15 miles away from me. Remember him in Skins - he's come a long way.

I was most impressed with Hailee Steinfeld in the Sinners movie, too. Not the biggest part but thought she did it well.

I have yet to see Steinfeld in something where I wasn't impressed. True Grit works because she shows the character's strength and feistiness. Bumblebee is a very good faux-'80s s.f./Transformers movie, the charm of which rests on her shoulders. And those were mainly when she was a kid. She could become a mainstay over the next decade.
